Question of the Day

Very interesting poll question on World Net Daily today ...

Can a porn star be a real Christian?

Yes, we're all sinners

Yes, Jesus had no problem associating with prostitutes

Yes, only God knows the heart

Yes, Jesus said: 'I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners'

Yes

No, not without repentance and leaving that sinful lifestyle

No, real Christians have the Holy Spirit living within to make them 'new creations' - not to remain comfortable with their old sins

No, the Bible clearly says the sexually immoral will not inherit the kingdom of God

No

My first thought is, Yes -- at least, a new Christian. (If a Christian has been a porn star for, oh, ten or fifteen years, I might question whether they're really receptive to the Spirit's promptings.) But most women in the pornography business are really just working to make a living. It's not usually a glamourous career. Just because they've become Believers doesn't mean that the circumstances that pushed them into the lifestyle will all go away. And I suspect (since I don't know any porn stars personally) that they're trapped by sin, feelings of worthlessness, and fear. So, yes, a Christian can be a porn star -- and has a much better chance of being redeemed from it in time.

Matthew was a crooked tax collector when Jesus called him - and how long did it take him to clean up his act? I agree with Sara that it's possible for a Christian to be found in besmirched circumstances, but out of sincerity and love for God that person should want to leave that lifestyle as quickly as possible. But it's not for us to judge how quickly that transformation needs to take place.

The question is a loaded one because it is ambiguous. Can a former porn star be a Christian? Yes. However, I think, viewing the question in the context of the World Net Daily article, it is asking, "Can a porn star be a real Christian while continuing in and insisting that God accept her chosen occupation?" No. To become a real Christian (i.e. regenerated) a person must realize their own sin before God, confess it to Him, and die to it, putting off the old man. While all real Christians continue to struggle with sin (putting off the old man) while here on earth, there is a fundamental difference between the one who says, "God, forgive me, a wretched sinner," and one who says, "God, you have to accept my actions as not sinful."

Jesus showed mercy to the woman caught in adultery, but He told her to sin no more.

I actually know a former porn star. (Yes, really) Once she came to know Christ and began to grow in Him, it was automatic for her to leave the porn industry.

So, I believe that anyone can be saved anywhere, but as Christians, we're called out of our sinful lifestyles.
