Culottes

Every once in a great while, for who knows what reason, I take it upon myself to comment on the latest fashion. Today is one of those days …

Never in my wildest imagination did I ever envision culottes coming into vogue. But, to my utter disbelief and astonishment, such is the case. Culottes are now “the thing.” Who would’ve thought?

Maybe my mind was blinded, thinking this trend impossible, because of those bygone ATI days. Maybe it’s the fact that I have a few horrid pictures of me, being 14 or so, and wearing a homemade pair of culottes! Not because they were fashionable but because they were modest and acceptable for a girl who liked sports but was bound by institutional legalism.

Ugh. Those are the pictures I’d like to rip out of my mom’s photo album and burn.

And to think … today I walked the mall and actually contemplated buying a pair to go with my boots! Not that the culottes I saw in the mall today can compare with those that originated from my mom’s sewing machine, of course.

Wow.

This is proof that you should never ever say never. Especially when it comes to fashion.

I have to agree...I can't bring myself to buy them b/c of the same reasons you said.
Sometimes new trends take me a while to adjust too........but CULOTTES????

Tuckster - That is a loaded question. Many persons on my blogroll, including myself, were involved in a very conservative homeschool organization where "godliness" was spelled out in terms besides what is given in scripture. In other words, modesty is a scriptural principal but this organization didn't leave it up to the Holy Spirit to work in your life to decide what exactly is modest but, rather, told you that the only thing acceptable for women is to wear skirts past the calves, no slits, etc. Although we were in this program for ten years, I (fortunately) only wore skirts (and sometimes, yes, culottes) strictly for about a year. And it was self-imposed (my parents didn't care) because my other girlfriends in this program did it too. Funny how peer pressure works sometimes!

Ah yes... some of us were grateful that a.)we were boys, so the whole skirt, modesty thing didn't apply and b.) our parents knew enough to know that some parts of said program were great, while others were stupid legalism.

And culottes will NEVER be in style... they look silly in their present incarnation. Just as silly as they used to:D

Amy, I so know what you mean about the old pictures. I have seriously considered burning my entire scrapbook covering the ages from 14 through 18. :-P And they bring back such horrid memories, I have NOT considered buying a pair of culottes -- even if they are in style. ;)

Ah ha! I knew there was a connection here... I was a member of the self-imposed legalism club brought to you by Bill Gothard in high school as well. (How's that for a run-on sentence?)

I wore mostly... jumpers (some I actually made myself!) and the occasional culotte. I cringe now. And my parents didn't care either. I've alluded to this funky form of peer pressure before as well. It was the best fit for me at that time, so I joined it full force.

So glad for grace now. And for the freedom to wear jeans just about every day!

Isn't it funny how peer pressure works? And what is more fun to watch is what breaks it. Sometimes, a light just dawns... which would probably be some form of spiritual maturity coming in (which I know the strict ATI types would probably say was a lack of... but whatever).

Other times, it is love. My sister went from being against most forms of rock music, to being about where I am... after she met her husband:)
