A Slow Emergence

Well, I'm slowly starting to reenter the land of the living. The last week (is that how long it's been?) has been surreal. Meredith is such a great baby. I could write on and on about all the escapades we've had thus far. Maybe I'll summarize a few of them sometime in the next few days. It's been wonderful to have Kevin home from work for the last week. The three of us have gotten in some good bonding time. Kevin's THE expert at calming Meredith when she's upset. It's truly amazing to see how good he is with her. The biggest challenge since she's been born is keeping her awake long enough to make her eat. We feel like we have to nearly torture her, by dragging wet cloths on her face and mercilessly tickling her feet, in order to make her wake up. In case you’ve never done it, fighting with a drowsy baby is not easy task. But I guess it’s better than an extremely fussy baby. At least we get some rest now and then!

On another note, I thought I'd include a link to my sister Betsy's blog. Lately she's been having quite a few adventures trekking across the country on flying jobs. She's updated her blog with some fun pictures. Apparently she was in Virginia last week and found some of my old stomping grounds. Seeing these pictures brought back a lot of fond memories. That was a such a great chapter of life.

But this one is too. So far, I like this mommy business.

By the way … I have a question. Is it ever too soon to paint a little girl’s toe nails? They’d look so cute! (We’re going to have so much fun together!!)

Call me when you're ready for some company and I'll come bearing something useful from Trader Joe's, where else? I loved the pictures on Betsy's site and found myself gazing longingly at the Rt 9/287 sign! Thanks for including her link, it made me less Virginia-sick today. :-)

Ooops, that was me, Janice. Forgot to sign my post. Must be this heat. :-^

Oooh, Amy, I am so glad to hear how blissfully things are working out for you! Your doctor may also have told you (and maybe it's just as ineffective) that if you strip Baby down to her diaper, she will wake up better. Newborns especially fall asleep easily when they are warm. Strip her clothes, blow on her face, and gently pinch her earlobes...I also found that bopping Jane's nose helped her concentrate, although now she associates that sensation with food, and bumps her nose against whoever is holding her when she gets hungry. (This often brings on a sneezing fit, so I just tell people that it's her way of taking snuff.)

On the toenails: By no means! I painted Jane's when she was six weeks old, and I would have done it sooner if I thought they were big enough. You practically need a one-haired brush to apply!

Brings back memories! My first wouldn't wake up for anything either. I even stuck her foot in my ice water and she just blissfully slept on. Looking back with more experience, I would feed on one side and nurse on the other when the baby is more awake unless that is uncomfortable for you. That was my MO for the last three. We didn't get on a 'schedule' in the first three weeks but it all evens out and we all got more sleep :) ENJOY! THAT is the most important thing. - VA Halls-

Your sister's hot.

Flying around with her boyfriend must be romantic. I hope she's keepin' it pure.

Ditto. Thanks for the VA pic links! :D My sister and I were looking at them going, "Oh! Look, it's such and such! Oh, look at this one!! I remember ..." (What an adventure your sis is living!! I wish I could do that ...) On toe-nails, if I had a baby girl, I would paint her nails ... :)

Hmmmm.....I would probably be okay with painting her toenails until she reached the stage where she was putting her toes in her mouth; of course, by then, it will probably be cooler weather and she'd have socks on anyways!

The pictures are beautiful! Glad to hear everyone is doing well.

One suggestion about the nail polish....I recently learned (due to my surgery in January) that most nail polish contains chemicals that are very harmful to adults. My thought is that if they're that harmful to adults, they would be even more harmful to a newborn. You want to avoid polish that contains formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates. According to what I've read, almost all of the store brands contain these chemicals. However, Mary Kay does not. So, the good news is that there's still nail polish out there that's ok. I would just avoid that other stuff with one so little.

Jeanette also happens to be your local Mary Kay sales lady. What a cowinkadink. :)

I personally stay away from Mary Kay as much as possible...pink cadillacs are a disgrace to the road.

For the record, I am NOT, nor do I ever want to be, a Mary Kay dealer. (No offense to all my friends who are!) I actually was pretty skeptical about Mary Kay when I first heard about it...for the same reason...I think pink Cadillacs are gross. I do like their stuff, however, and they are a Christian company, which is partly why I decided to use their stuff. A lot of cosmetic companies support various social agendas that I believe are morally wrong and it's nice to buy from a company that doesn't do that. Anyway - just setting the record straight.

I only use cosmetics that are first tested on lab animals, especially the cute ones.

I know for a fact that you are a 'dealer' Jeanette! I hope you know where liars go...

Anonymous said...

Well, I question anyone who has friends who are Mary Kay dealers.

That speaks loud and clear of your character.

Matt, you're an idiot. Leave poor Jeanette alone. Go bill some hours! Take one of your four weeks of vacation. (That last one was from Braiden.)

Love,
Kevinicus

Who's Matt? He sounds like a ravaging young man. Certainly not like Kevin the Finger the Fist Amir White Bread.

Yeah Koons....KOOOOOOOOOONS!

Oh, the liar post was from Braiden.

Okay, K&A, I am so sorry to get off topic on a post which should be all about your beautiful daughter (any more pictures yet? Pleeez?) but I am just dying of curiosity over these recent comments. 1) Do you know these people? 2) How can you tell, as you so glibly seem to do, the identity of anonymous posters? That would be SUCH a handy skill!

Jeanette, thanks for the info about the nail polish. I had never heard that it could be harmful, although one might guess from the powerful smell that it's not the most healthful thing to be around. =) And while MK is generally too pricey for me, I agree with you on their philosophy of good business and good quality makeup.

Dear Rose:

To answer your question, Kevin and Amy do not know us; we are but random bloggers posting our way through the blogosphere. The real question is: do they know you?

By the way, this 'Matt' fellow does not sound ravishing in the least.

Rose - Mary Kay is pricey...but I have a friend who gives it to me at cost...50% off. Otherwise I'd be buying my stuff at Walmart like other normal people.

As for the rest of you random blogger people....very funny. Glad to know Kevin and Amy have so many funny friends....even if they don't know who they are.

Actually Rose, we are Kevin and Amy's evil non-homeschooled friends. BGI.

KOOOOOOOONS!!!!!

Kevin, you shouldn't tell Concha we are hijacking Amy's blog. She needs a new topic and this one will die.

KOOOOOOOONS!!!!

Wow ... I've been a slacker at checking my own blog comments (never mind posting!). You guys (you know who you are) are very entertaining. :)

I agree w/ Jeanette that the chemicals in toe nail polish are harmful, they soak in through the nail. (Ever had your nails turn yellow from a dark nail polish? Same thing happens with the "invisible" chemicals.) While I would say that using a "safe" nail polish on Meredith is fine, you shouldn't keep it on her for long periods of time, give her little toe nails time to breathe.

Meredith is adorable... and I can imagine wanting to paint her toe nails. :)
