Kid Quotes

Clara:

I constantly give Clara lectures about not drinking milk that has been sitting out (i.e., the sippy cup got lost for a few hours). One day I said, “Clara, old milk will make you sick.” Her eyes widened and she asked, “Make me killed?”

Clara is so excited about her new baby sister. She loves to talk to her. She presses her lips against my tummy and says things like, “I a big sister” and “Hey baby! When you going come out?!”

While in California last month, we pulled up to a drive through. Clara spotted ice cream on the menu and said, “I like ice cream!” Kevin proceeded to order two tacos. Clara then yelled, “No! I no want two tacos.” She then leaned forward as far as she could in her carseat and screamed, “Hey, LADY!! I no want two tacos!!”

Clara is such a junk food junkie. If we let her, she would only eat sugar. One day I told her, "If all you eat is sugar you will be fat with lots of pimples." She replied, "I like be fat and pimples!"

Kevin took Clara for a daddy/daughter date on Saturday morning. We have been having to discipline her a lot lately and he wanted to give her some extra time and positive attention. He let her pick where to go for breakfast: McDonald's or Starbucks. At first she said "McDonalds." Then after they got in the car she said, "ACTUALLY, Starbucks!"

Meredith:

She recently pulled a sesame seed off her hamburger bun and said, “Oh look mom! Now we can plant hamburgers and grow them in our garden. Let’s save some of these!”

At bedtime, I leaned down and gave her 5-6 kisses. She said, “I’m going to give YOU even more kisses than that. Your face is bigger so I can give you more.”

At a restaurant, I took Meredith with me to the restroom. Behind us there were some dark haired ladies. She said in a loud voice, “Are those Chinese people coming in here too?” In the stall, I quietly told her that it’s not nice to talk about where people are from in front of them. She meekly replied, “I’m little and I just don’t know very much yet, do I?”

Another round of kid quotes ...

First, I will start this post with a quote from Clara. Her quote-debut on my blog!

We pulled up to some hamburger joint’s drive-thru the other day and she pointed to the window and said, “Freh Fry!” (French fry.) At only 18 months, she is an all-American kid!
____________

And here are some Meredith quotes of late:

A: “Okay, it’s quiet time. You don’t have to sleep but you do have to lay still and close your eyes.”
M: “But that IS sleeping.”

We have a CD set of Mozart music. Meredith saw a man on the cover (Mozart) wearing a white wig. She said to her dad, “Look, it’s George Washington music!”

She was standing on the window ledge the other day, to get a better view.
K: “Meredith, get off the window.”
M: “Why?”
A: “Usually there are two reasons—you’ll break it or you’ll get hurt.”
M: “Actually, there are three reasons. Another reason is ‘because daddy said.’”

M (eating lunch): “Why aren’t we eating at McDonald’s today?”
A: “McDonald’s is a treat. It’s not as healthy for you. And it costs extra money to go there. Everyone has a certain amount of money and you have to be careful about how you spend the money God gives you.”
M (five minutes later, holding up a crayon drawing): “Mom, can I sell this picture to grandma?”
A: “Why don’t you just give it to her?”
M: “Because I need money for McDonald’s.”

She was wailing the other day—obviously she had hurt herself.
A: “What happened?”
M: “I bonked my finger and my head. I kissed my finger (to make it better) but I tried and tried and I just couldn’t reach my head!!”

The other day a friend came and worked on her laptop from my house while her daughter played with my girls.
M: “When I grow up I will bring my work to your house like Mrs. S.”
A: “And I will watch your babies. Are you going to have babies some day?”
M: “Yes. I’m going to have a girl baby like you.”
A: “That would be nice.”
M: “Maybe tonight at Family Worship we can pray about my baby when I get big. And we can ask God that it will be a girl.”

A: “Mer, I think you’re hungry and tired.”
M: “Nooooooo.”
A: “What are you then?”
M: “I’m thirsty and tired!”

She was curious to know what her new friend Alex’s daddy looked like, because she had never seen him.
A (explaining): “He has brown hair like your daddy but he is shorter than your daddy. And he’s thin, not fat.”
M (gasping loudly): “Is daddy FAT?”

M: “Mom, are we all going to heaven?”
A: “Yes, if we trust in Jesus and love Him.”
M: “Let’s pray about that now. ‘Jesus, I want to go to heaven. And we love you and trust you and please take us to heaven soon. Amen.’”

Meredith is so inquisitive these days. Yesterday she wanted to know why snow plow trucks don't have "snow blowers" on them like daddy uses. I needed to ask Kevin, her grandpa, and her uncle for help on answering that one!

The post in which Meredith explains the Internet ...

K: “What did you do this morning?”
M: “I read some books. I wish I could play a computer game.”
K: “Why do you like computer games?”
M: “Because it’s fun. I need to go see if the Internet is working.”
K: “What is the Internet?”
M: “It’s those wires that go from our house to Mr. John’s house and back to our computer. And there’s a yellow sign on our computer that says it’s not working.”

[Side note: Who would have thought that you would have to start putting computer restrictions on children as young as age three! I was thinking maybe age ten or something. Meredith has become quite adept at figuring out how to browse her favorite computer game websites. If we didn’t set a timer for 15 minutes, she would spend at least an hour doing it. We found out recently that Meredith knows some basic Chinese greetings and how to count to three in Chinese, because of one of her computer games!!]

Meredith has also figured out how to call her daddy using speed dial. This could be helpful if there’s an emergency but it’s not so great if she calls Kevin five times a day just to see what he’s up to. She also loves to answer my phone, sometimes without my knowledge. Today a man called and she handed the phone to me, telling me it’s “Great Grandma.”

Meredith told Clara the other day: “Clara, I will be right back. I have to go potty. While I’m gone, you just try to stay out of trouble!” Such a first born!

A: “Mer, how ‘bout we paint your new bedroom green.”
M: “No. I want the walls ALL pink. I want lots of pink stuff. I want princesses and ballerinas and pink.”

She recently went to her kitchen set to find a pretend “dog biscuit” so she could feed her pretend dog. When she arrived at her kitchen set, she said, “Oh no! There’s no food here. That is so STRESSFUL!” [Where does she come up with these words? Do I use that word in front of her?!]

M: “Do you remember that I want ballet lessons?”
K: “Do you like ballet?”
M: “Yes. I do ballet all the time!”

A: “Meredith, I hope you won’t waste your orange juice.”
M: “I don’t want my O.J. because it has feathers in it!”
[This is when I peered into her orange juice cup and noticed that it had pulp in it.]

M: “I want to surf some day.”
A: “Really? What is surfing?”
M: “It’s with a surf board.”
A: “What do you do with a surf board?”
M: “You stand on it and it floats. It’s such a fun toy!”

Meredith has made this sudden transition from a little girl to a big girl. I don’t know how else to describe it. She converses so freely and has become such a good problem solver. I feel like, just in the last week, she has made this huge leap into young girlhood. It’s fun to watch and also scary to realize that there are more challenges in parenting ahead! And more joys, of course!

And yes, I know I really need to do a Clara post sometime soon. She’s starting to say a ton of stuff too. Her favorite word these days is “balloo” for balloon. Do you realize that there are balloons everywhere? I mean everywhere. I never realized how many balloons there are in the world until I had Clara to point them out to me!!
