When we were at the Indianapolis Zoo this summer and saw the interactive bird exhibit, we just knew we had to bring Granny there. Granny loves her bird feeders and has provided nourishment to many birds over the years, as well as lots of entertainment for all who chance to see the beautiful birds that come to take their meals in her backyard.
What a beautiful fall day at the zoo!

Zinnias
Carson sat in his Bumbo seat and watched while I turned over and raked a small patch of dirt behind our house. This section of ground was chosen because it gets lots of sun and also because I can't see it from any of the windows in my house. If I could see the flowers from, say, my living room window, I wouldn't want to pick them and bring them inside. No. These flowers are meant to be paired with a vase and placed on the counter top. I can't wait!
As I slowly dropped little zinnia seeds into the earth, I was reminded that last year, and the year before, I wanted to plant zinnias but wasn't able to do it. There just wasn't enough time or energy, despite all my desire.
So it was with a light heart that I realized that I'm at a place now where I can plant zinnias.
As I pinched more seeds from the envelope, I determined that when the zinnias are in bloom and I pick them for my table, I will also pick a vase for a mom who is perhaps in the same place I have been these last two years: wishing and hopeful, but with all her time and energy already mortgaged out for other necessary tasks.
Planting zinnias also reminded me of Sally Clarkson's No More Desperate Moms Resolution. Hopefully the latter of the two resolutions is something I can remember as I move beyond the current season of life, to keep on encouraging people who are still in the middle of it, with zinnias or otherwise.
Today I enjoyed the planting, the time with my little son, the sunshine on my back, the dirt between my fingers, and a little more room in my life to breathe!
Now I just hope I can keep up with the watering and weeding. (Or get my kids to do it!) Then things will really be golden, right?

Butterfly Wonder
Some of you may remember we ordered caterpillars two years ago, to watch their amazing metamorphosis in our own home. It is totally worth doing. The girls were enthralled and loved the anticipation of it all.
When the caterpillars first arrive, they are teeny tiny.

After a week or so, the caterpillars are HUGE.

Soon, they crawl up to the top of their container to prepare for their next phase. You can see that the first chrysalis has already formed on the right side.
After all the cocoons are complete, we take the paper off the lid of the container and pin it to the side of a mesh cage. Here, the butterflies have all hatched. An exciting day! (The red stuff is meconium, not blood.)
The girls wanted to wait until their Aunt Melissa came from California to release the butterflies. Apparently, they only live for two weeks. So, they had to spend half their lives in a stuffy cage, instead of being wild and free outside. Poor things. Here the girls are, ready to release the butterflies.
What is this? One little butterfly refuses to take flight. When we look closer, he is a crippled little fellow. One of his wings has either broken off or it did not fully develop. I didn't have the heart to set him in the bushes because he surely would have become instant dinner for a nearby bird. So, we put him back in the cage so he can live out the rest of his life in the comfort of our climate-controlled kitchen, being fed sugar water every day, by my hand. It's probably not a bad life. It's better than being bird food, surely.

Bringing the Outdoors Inside
Despite the fact that it's the dead of winter, there are still some pretty things outside--if you look very closely. Meredith and I took a walk on Saturday and enjoyed finding things to collect and bring inside our house. Here's what we found:
And bless my dear friend Heather for giving me these tulips, a wonderful reminder that Spring Is Around the Corner!!! Aren't they pretty?
